Health care needs updated anti-trust policies
In a statement to the U.S. House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee Sept. 9, the AMA examined the current state of consolidation in the health care industry, including areas where changes are needed to protect patients and encourage the success of new models of patient care. Read more in AMA Wire.
AMA studies have consistently found:
- A wide majority of local health insurance markets across the nation are highly concentrated=decreased competition and higher prices for patients.
- The trend of hospitals merging and acquiring physician practices= reduced competition, increase in the amount of care patients receive in more costly inpatient settings.
8 Simple Steps: How To Keep Your Heart Healthy
The information being published on heart disease is very encouraging. Great information I came across today!
“We have learned a tremendous amount in recent years about the risk factors that predispose us to heart disease. One of the important things we have learned is that each of us has significant control over most of these risk factors. And therefore, to a large extent, each of us holds our cardiac fate in our own hands. Even people who have strong a genetic predisposition to heart disease can often significantly delay the onset of heart problems by adopting healthy lifestyles.”

The Generosity of Entrepreneurs
I love this article. So many people bash business, capitalism, entrepreneurs. But for MOST of us, this article is what it is all about. Creativity, ingenuity, determination and drive. Recognizing a need in the community and coming up with an idea to fill that need or solve that problem. Creating and providing jobs, being part of the solution, trying to help enhance our local communities. Happy New Year to all of my fellow business owners, may 2011 be a more prosperous year for all of us!
My thoughts on customer service – part 1
As I was reading this article on customer service in the medical industry it hit me again just how foreign this concept is.
http://bit.ly/ctE0zI
It hit home because last week I was the recipient of poor customer service at a Physicians office. What makes matters even worse? It was one of MY colleagues. I had to wait over an hour with my father…an hour after the scheduled appointment time until the Physician saw us. We arrived 10 minutes early to make sure WE had enough time to fill out his paperwork!
I understand the time crunch Physicians find themselves in, we provide ultrasound service to their clinics everyday.
I applaud the Cleveland Clinic and their passion for excellent customer service and look forward to implementing some of their ideas to add to our own.

Congress Wants Hospitals to (Finally) Disclose Medical Prices — Do you think this is a pointless exercise?
I love that we are FINALLY talking about this issue! I’ve been reading about this all week and have not had time to post.
I have strong feelings about this and will be writing more about this over the weekend. I think this is a great thing, something that is LONG overdue. Patients need to know what they are paying for, especially now when patients are faced with high deductibles and more and more patients are paying cash or using HRA or HSA plans. Interesting article from Ken Terry.
The National Stroke Association has great information on stroke prevention and awareness. I was surprised to learn that stroke is the third leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability in America. We urge you to read the bullet points below and help educate others about how to:
- STOP stroke through risk factor management.
- Act F.A.S.T. to increase recognition of and response to stroke symptoms.
